Chinese is spoken by over 1.4 billion people, making it the most spoken language in the world. Mandarin Chinese is the official language of China and Taiwan, and is also one of the four official languages of Singapore. Cantonese is the official language of Hong Kong and Macau, and is also widely spoken in Guangdong province in China and among Chinese communities in other parts of the world.

What is the difference between Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese?

Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese are two distinct dialects of the Chinese language. One of the main differences between Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese is the tonality of the languages. Mandarin Chinese has four tones (plus a neutral tone), while Cantonese has nine tones (including a high rising tone and a low falling tone). This means that words that are pronounced the same way in Mandarin Chinese can have different meanings in Cantonese, depending on the tone used.

Another difference is the vocabulary; although both Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese use the same set of Chinese characters, the spoken words can be quite different. For example, the word for "goodbye" in Mandarin Chinese is "zai jian", while in Cantonese it is "baai baai".

How hard is it to learn Chinese?

This can be difficult for English speakers to master, as English is not a tonal language.

The writing system of Chinese is also a challenge for English speakers. Chinese is a logographic writing system, meaning that characters represent meanings rather than sounds. This means that there is a larger number of characters to learn and that each character must be learned individually, rather than as part of a phonetic system like the alphabet.

On average, it may take an English speaker around 88 weeks of regular study to become proficient in Chinese, making it one of the harder languages for an English speaker to learn.
