In this fairytale, a king's golden apple is stolen from his garden every year, and no one knows who the thief is. The king promises his kingdom to the son who can retrieve the apple or find the thief. The three sons take turns trying to solve the mystery, and it is the youngest who finally succeeds with the help of a fox. The fox gives him advice on how to capture a golden bird that takes the apple, but warns him not to touch a linden tree on his way. The youngest son breaks this rule, but manages to escape the wrath of the powerful troll who owns the tree. He then steals a horse and bridle from another troll, promising to bring him a beautiful maiden in exchange for his life. With the help of the fox, the youngest son fulfills his promise and wins the kingdom.
