In "Buried Spirit"", a poor student stumbles upon a dead man and, despite having very little money, offers to pay for his funeral. As he continues his journey, he falls asleep in a forest and wakes up to find his pockets full of gold. On his way to cross a great river, he is killed by two ferrymen who steal his gold. However, he is saved by the spirit of the dead man he buried, who teaches him spells to turn into a crow, hare, and deer. Later, he becomes the court archer of a powerful king and accepts the challenge of obtaining the victorious sword of the king's daughter, who lives on an inaccessible island.
