The story begins with a mother and daughter traveling for six months until they arrive at the garden of the Pádisha of Cachimácsin. There, they meet a cat with many afflictions. The story then shifts to the woodcutter and his quarrelsome wife. The wife takes all the woodcutter's earnings, leaving him with nothing. One day, the woodcutter goes to the mountain to cut wood, and his wife follows him. She falls into a well, and the woodcutter rescues an ugly ghost. The ghost thanks him and explains that he had been trapped in the well for years until the old woman fell in. The woodcutter is frightened, but the ghost assures him that the state will bless him for his kindness.
