In this story, a poor girl tries to sell matches on a cold New Year's Eve. She is terribly cold, but afraid to go home without selling any matches, she finds a nook and lights one of the matches to keep warm. In the embers of the match she sees dream visions like a Christmas tree and a sumptuous dinner.
