In "Puss in Boots" three sons inherit a mill, a donkey, and a cat from their deceased father. While the eldest and middle sons took the mill and the donkey, respectively, the youngest son, Matýsko, is left with the cat. Much to his surprise, the cat can speak and asks Matýsko to buy him boots and a hat so they can go out into the world together. The cat devises a plan to catch a wild rabbit and bring it to the king, who has been ill and requires it to be cured. The cat's plan succeeds, and the king rewards him and Matýsko with ducats. The cat continues to help the king and eventually leads Matýsko to a castle that the cat says belongs to him. It is there that the cat reveals his magical abilities and helps Matýsko become the new ruler.
